The Finnish Navy’s Squadron 2020 project has reached a significant milestone, with the third Pohjanmaa-class multi-purpose corvette launched at the Rauma shipyard in October 2026. All four vessels in the series are now under construction simultaneously. Koja is supplying the HVAC systems for all four vessels.
The Pohjanmaa-class corvettes are being built as part of Squadron 2020, a strategic capability development programme of the Finnish Defence Forces. The project comprises four multi-purpose corvettes, which are scheduled for completion by 2029. The vessels will enter service in phases.
In the future, these vessels will form the operational backbone of the Finnish Navy. They are designed for year-round operation in the demanding weather and ice conditions of the Baltic Sea and are capable of performing a wide range of maritime missions, from surveillance and securing sea lines of communication to underwater warfare.
The multi-purpose corvettes are being built at the Rauma shipyard of Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC). RMC and its subsidiary RMC Defence Oy are responsible for the construction of the vessels in cooperation with the Finnish Navy and an extensive industrial network.
The vessel construction programme is currently in full series production, with all four vessels progressing through different stages of construction. The first and second vessels are in the outfitting phase, while the launch of the third vessel was celebrated in Rauma on 29 October 2026. Construction of the fourth vessel began in early 2026.
The corvettes are approximately 117 metres long and are designed for a crew of around 70.
Koja is supplying the vessels’ air-conditioning systems, including installation, as well as ventilation equipment for the machinery spaces. Deliveries are scheduled for 2023–2028.
In a demanding naval vessel project such as the Pohjanmaa-class corvettes, ventilation systems play a critical role. They ensure suitable working conditions for personnel, manage heat loads in technical spaces and support the reliable operation of onboard systems.
“Squadron 2020 has given us the opportunity to contribute to the development of Finland’s maritime defence capabilities. The Pohjanmaa-class multi-purpose corvettes represent world-class expertise in the development of naval vessels designed for operation in ice conditions,” says Vesa Aalto, Business Director of Koja’s Marine business area.
Participation in Squadron 2020 is an important demonstration of Koja’s expertise in demanding and safety-critical marine industry projects. The project strengthens the company’s position as a key player in the Finnish marine industry and as an internationally competitive system supplier.
For several decades, Koja has worked as a partner to shipowners and shipyards on vessels ranging from the world’s largest cruise ships to icebreakers and research vessels.
“Government vessel projects are one of the key focus areas for the future of Koja’s Marine business. Projects of this level of complexity require reliable and advanced solutions, and this is where Koja’s expertise really comes into its own,” says Aalto.
